Skip Barber Racing School
Skip Barber Racing School at SimRacing Expo Charlotte
SimRacing Expo Charlotte is proud to welcome Skip Barber Racing School, North America’s most prestigious racing and driving education institution. Founded in 1975 by three-time SCCA national champion John “Skip” Barber III, this legendary school has shaped the careers of over 400,000 students and continues to set the standard for motorsports education worldwide.
A Legacy Built on Racing Excellence
The story of Skip Barber Racing School begins with a Harvard-educated English graduate who became a champion race car driver. After competing in Formula 1 and winning consecutive Formula Ford National Championships in 1969 and 1970, Skip Barber transitioned from the cockpit to the classroom with a revolutionary belief: competitive race car driving was teachable, just like any other sport.
In 1975, Barber started the institution with just two borrowed Lola Formula Fords and four students at Riverside International Raceway. By 1976, it had been renamed Skip Barber Racing School, and the Skip Barber Race Series was established. What began as a modest endeavor has grown into the world’s largest automotive education and entertainment company, producing more winning racers than any other institution.
The school’s alumni roster reads like a who’s who of motorsports: Jeff Gordon, Michael Andretti, Danny Sullivan, Juan Pablo Montoya, Helio Castroneves, Colton Herta, Alexander Rossi, Paul Newman, and countless others. More than one-third of the starting lineup in the 2022 Indy 500 were graduates, and every American competing in the GTP class of the 2026 IMSA Rolex 24 at Daytona learned their craft here.
In 2013, Skip Barber was inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame, and in 2025, he earned recognition in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. After celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, the institution continues to build champions through proven teaching methods and world-class instruction.
